AS REPORTED BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER THIS CAR WAS POSSIBLY 1 OF 3 THAT WERE SHIPPED TO SHELBY ENTERPRISES IN EARLY JUNE 1964 WHERE CARROLL SHELBY & POSSIBLY KEN MILES RACED IT A WILLOW SPRINGS RACETRACK IN ORDER TO TEST A HIGH PERFORMANCE MUSTANG FOR HIS FORTHCOMING GT350 RACE CAR.

REGISTERED IN 10/1964 AND SOLD BY DAVE GRUBB OF 'GRUBB FORD' OF BURBANK, CA WITH JUST OVER 300 MILES ON THE ODOMETER TO A PERSONAL FRIEND, ROBERT BRIGGS. THE CAR SUBSEQUENTLY PASSED TO HIS SON, GARY BRIGGS, WHO OWNED THE CAR UNTIL 1987 WHEN IT WAS SOLD TO ONLY ITS SECOND CALIFORNIA OWNER, MEL.

This is a very early model car which was built in early June 1964 with the 64 1/2 window cranks and door handles. It boasts it's original 'Vintage Burgundy' color paint with a 'Black Crinkle Vinyl' standard interior and was built on 6/9/1964 with the desirable top loader 4 speed manul transmission and conventional 4.11:1 axle and 9" rear end and originally sold in Los Angeles, CA at 'Grubb Ford' of Burbank, CA and this is a car that has spent its whole life garaged in southern California and is a true time capsule with only one very professional repaint in its original color!

Ford's biggest success of the sixties and the originator of the 'Pony car' concept was essentially a sporty compact car but with a now legendary long hood and short deck proportions, built on Falcon and Fairlane chassis and drive-train components, the Ford Mustang was introduced in April 1964 as '65 models and within a year became the fastest selling car of all time; with these early production cars now carrying special favor! The upgraded V8 from the Falcon six cylinder engine was the 260 c.i. V8 produced on the same assembly line with other 1964 Fords, the early models were titled as 1965 models although they were actually from the 1964 production era. After September 1964 the 260 V8 was dropped in favor of the larger 289 V8 high performance 'A' code 289/225HP 4 barrel V8 or the top-of-the-line 'K' code 289/270HP 4 barrel V8 like this particular car!

The Ford Mustang K-code cars were an extremely limited production High Performance edition of the popular Mustang. With a 289 cubic inch V-8 featuring upgraded pistons, cylinder heads, carburetor, lifter heads, and connecting rods this modified engine put out over 271 HP with the entire drive train designed to handle a high performance engine with a special clutch, drive shaft, rear differential and suspension and which as built as a performance-oriented vehicle featured a 4-speed manual transmission. For the same reason air conditioning and power steering were not available and Ford used discs in the front.

K-code Mustangs are considered among the most desirable classic Mustangs by enthusiasts. The K-Code was only built between the years 1964 1/2 -1967. First offered with Ford's Comet and Fairlane models in 1963, the K-Code was a 289 cubic-inch high-performance V8 engine. The K in the VIN designates the Factory High Performance model, which accounts for less than 1% of the Mustang production from 1965 to 1967.

The K-code 289/271hp engine was mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission and were sold with a very low options list to ensure and enhance the high performance. This is one such early production model which has the correct steering-column-mounted Rally Pak with the 8,000 rpm tachometer, K-Code Mustang special badge on its front fenders that read HIGH PERFORMANCE 289 and the High Performance 289 decal on top of the air cleaner.

During the K-Codes three year run from 1965 to 1967, reportedly less than of 1% were fitted with the K-Code engine! (Thats a mere 13,231 of 1,760,678 cars!); with a total production of 7,273 from introduction through '65; 5,469 in '66; and according to Marti Auto Works, 489 in '67. Just a reminder of the rarity of this car!

This particular example is one of the first run of 50 HiPo 289 64.5 Mustangs. This first run started June 7th and this cars predicted build date was June 9th. It has the VIN stamped original motor, it also has the HiPo sequence number stamped into the pad above the clutch bell crank, VIN stamped top loader transmission, all the correct HiPo and dual exhaust supports installed on K code cars from the factory, and dealer installed am/reverb radio. This will certainly be a prize for the HiPo collector being one of reportedly only 71 Coupes or 4.77% of total registered K codes. There were reportedly another 26 Convertibles or 1.75% of total registered K codes built.

As previously stated, this is an obviously always well maintained, garaged and cherished original 'Black License Plate' California car since new. This car must be driven to be fully appreciated - the original engine is extremely strong and responsive and the 4 speed manual transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the engine temperature always remains cool.

The car is simply a superb 'trailer queen' with it's original factory 'Vintage Burgundy' color paint and Black 'Crinkle Vinyl' standard interior! This is one very superb example of this very rare and collectible and most desirable early production example of the legendary 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang 'K' Code High Performance 4 speed model in turn-key ready daily appreciating, daily driving and daily head-turning condition!

You will look long and hard to find a finer example of this highly sought after original southern California 'Black license plate' 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang 2 door coupe with its original high performance 289 'K' code V8 engine with the 4 speed manual transmission!
