ASC McLaren Mustangs were the result of fortuitous timing and a project that was already underway between the well regarded and long established 'American Sunroof Company' and legendary 'McLaren'. Detroit custom car builder Peter Muscat brought the idea of a Mustang with a tonneau cover to ASC after removing the top off of a Fox body and in turn ASC founder Heinz Pretcher brought the concept to Ford. 'Big Blue' was in the midst of relaunching a Mustang convertible which had been absent from the lineup for some 10 years, so initially a Mercury Capri was used to develop the ASC/McLaren treatment.

This car is the actual development prototype that paved the way for the ASC McLaren Mustangs you occasionally see today. They gave the car some very obvious visual modifications, both inside and out, but left the potent Capri drivetrain untouched. Due to the high price of the car and disputes between Muscat and Pretcher, the ASC McLaren Mustangs were to be shelved as a concept by 1990, with only some 2,678 ASC McLaren conversions completed with only some 1,800 convertibles in total making them both rare and collectible today, but none so rare and unique as this initial prototype from 1986.

This highly original car boasts it's original 'Navy Blue' Haartz/Cambria cloth soft top with a power latched tonneau cover. The car has a very straight body with no accidents and it's original White paint is in very good condition and matches the highly striking White 'Campagnolo' honeycomb alloy wheels. The car boasts many modern upgrades for it's day including four wheel power disc brakes, heated 'Recaro' fine 'Navy Blue' leather sports seats, a polished hardwood dash and trim, a period correct 'Cobra CB radio' perfect for trucker alerts for those pesky speeding cops, the iconic and legendary Ford 5.0L V8 engine which can boast only 18K original miles and a 'Kenwood' audio system.

The 3rd generation Mustang's were produced from 1978 to 1993. Built on Fords legendary 'Fox platform', they evolved through a number of sub-models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its production life. It underwent several changes for 1987 and for a time seemed destined for replacement with a front wheel drive Mazda platform before company executives were swayed by overwhelming consumer excitement and demand to keep the 'Fox' body platform. Enthusiasts group the generation into two segments: the initial 1979-1986 cars, with their quad headlight arrangement and the later 1987-1993 cars with their aero composite headlamped front fascia styling. Production ended with the introduction of the 4th generation Mustang for the 1994 model year.

Finished in it's original 'White' color exterior paint with a beautiful 'Navy Blue' Leather Articulated 'Recaro' Bucket Sports Seats interior and a matching 'Navy Blue' color cloth soft top, this particular car is a rare and very fine example with very low original miles and which drives as new and has obviously always been well maintained.

You will certainly look long and hard to find a finer looking or driving and indeed an extraordinarily rare and unique  example of this loaded 1986 Mercury ASC McLaren 5.0L V8 Convertible with only 18K original miles; for the most likely fastest in it's class and the ultimate 19
80's muscle car driving experience in an increasingly and collectible truly unique one off American prototype from ASC and the legendary McLaren and in it's increasingly desirable and collectible original 'Fox' body!
