Dodge reintroduced the Challenger in 2008 as part of the industrys retro-inspired muscle-car renaissance. Drawing largely from the 1970 Challenger R/T, the new Challenger had a wide, menacing stance and was available in a variety of colors and with a selection of powerful engines, highlighted by the 425 hp SRT8. The Challenger became an instant hit for MOPAR fans who had been waiting years for such a release.


The Challenger received a face-lift in 2015, with the high-performance SRT8 replaced by the SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat. The Hellcat put out an astonishing 707 hp, capable of rocketing to 60 mph in only 3.6 seconds and hitting a top speed of 199 mph. However, the Hellcat was just the beginning of Dodges foray in the contemporary horsepower wars.

In April 2017, at the New York Auto Show, Dodge debuted the limited production Challenger SRT Demon. Essentially a street-legal drag car, the Demon was powered by 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 which puts out an incredible 840 horsepower and 717 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted via steering-mounted paddles. The Demon is capable of screaming past 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds and can destroy the quarter mile in 9.14 seconds at 152 mph and is a limited production wide-body and extreme (drag race level) performance variant of the already high-performance Challenger SRT Hellcat.

The Demon uses an all-new 6.2-liter V8 engine equipped with a 2.7-liter supercharger, which is rated at 808 hp with 91 octane gasoline and 840 hp with 100 octane fuel or higher (both outputs are with the red key fob supplied with the car). Torque stands at 770 lb⋅ft on 100 octane fuel. The car weighs 215 lb (98 kg) less than the Hellcat, the total being 4,254 lb (1,930 kg). The SRT Demon uses a set of road tires by Nitto Tire, called the NT05R. The tires are the 315/40R18 variations at both front and rear. The tires are targeted for the drag strip, but have enough tread pattern to make them legal for the road. This tire, although an NT05R consumer tire, is a variation built specifically to withstand the power output of the Demon. This makes the Challenger SRT Demon the first production car to contain a set of drag radial road tires. The SRT Demon contains a system that is used specifically for drag racing called transbrake, which is a mechanism that puts the transmission in 1st gear and the reverse gear simultaneously, holding the Demon stationary. This is used along with the car's torque converter to build up hydraulic pressure before launch.

The SRT Demon accelerates from 030 mph in 1.0 second, 060 mph in 2.3 seconds, 0100 mph in 5.1 seconds, a top speed of 168 mph (factory limited), and the quarter mile (400 m) in only 9.65 seconds at 140.09 mph. This makes the Demon the fastest non-electric production car to reach 0-60 mph and to complete a straight-line quarter mile at its time of announcement. The SRT Demon is also capable of accelerating at 1.8 G's of force at launch, making this the hardest launching production car. The boost pressure of the supercharger can be increased to 14.5 psi and redline up to 6,500 rpm. With this extreme power, and hard acceleration, the SRT Demon is the first production car to perform a wheelie. With the control module from the "Demon Crate" and high-speed tires, the Demon has attained a top speed of over 200 mph (320 km/h) in test runs. Because of the lack of an NHRA certified roll cage, which is required if the quarter-mile time is under 10 seconds, the NHRA banned the SRT Demon from competition.

Like the SRT Hellcat, it comes with both red and black key fobs, with the black fob limiting the power output to 500 hp. With the red key and the use of 100+ octane gasoline, the Demon can utilize its full power potential. Only 3,300 cars were made, with production beginning in the summer of 2017 and market introduction happening in the fall of 2017.

The interior of the SRT Demon is the same as all other Challenger trims, but with changes that differentiate it to the other trims. The Demon only includes a front driver's seat as standard, and no other seats front or rear in the vehicle. However, the front passenger's seat, as well as a rear bench seat, can both be added back as options for one dollar each. To replace the rear seats, Dodge included rear roll bars, and has a 4-point harness installed on it for the driver seat. The dashboard display and the seats now have the Demon logo on them, and includes a performance display on it, as well as on the center console touch screen.

The following list below is a breakdown of how Dodge engineers reduced the curb weight of the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon to 4,255 lb over the 4,469 lb curb weight of the SRT Hellcat, a difference of 216 lb.

The Challenger SRT Demon is even mightier than the Hellcat version, boasting up to 840 horsepower and exclusive drag-racing equipment. Did we mention that it can do a wheelie, too? With the limited-edition Demon going out of production after the 2018 model year, it is already destined to be one of the most collectible and  iconic muscle cars to ever wear a Dodge badge. Many of its engine and transmission goodies are now available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye but still, even the most powerful pony-car competitors, such as the 650-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1 and the 700-plus-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, are all hard-pressed to match the straight-line acceleration of the Demon. The Demon the quickest street car ever tested. Period. That includes million-dollar hypercars and 1000-hp aftermarket specials. To outrun the rules, the Demon leaves the lights at a claimed 1.8 gssome 50 percent harder than even the Porsche 918 Spyderyanking its front wheels off the ground and carrying a wheelie for a few feet on its way past 60 mph just 2.3 seconds into the run. Drag racers will appreciate the 1.36-second 60-foot time; this is unabashedly a numbers car. But the story of those numbers involves a lot more than just a big figure in the horsepower column.

The heart of this demonic Challenger is its 808+hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. Wait, didn't we already say it makes 840 horsepower? That is correct, but only when the gas tank is filled with 100-plus-octane race fuel and the $1 Demon Crate package is added, which includes a special engine controller that helps unlock the engine's full potential. Add, or should we say subtract, numerous interior pieces to make it lighter, along with the many other weight-saving methods, and Dodge claims the Demon can cover the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph.


The drag radials are rated for only 168 mph, which is why the Demon is governed where the less powerful Hellcat is free to run to 199mph. A Demon logo molded into the sidewall proves the Nittos arent off-the-shelf rubber. Near-slicks, they have just enough tread to be street legal and are designed to run lower pressures to allow the sidewall to wrinkle at launch for that last shred of grip. A devil-tail index mark stamped into the wheels helps ensure that theyre not running too little pressure. Simply make a mark on the tire next to the tail before a pass; if it moves relative to the tail, your wheels are spinning inside the tires, and you need to add air.

Wider by 1.7 inches than the rubber on a Hellcat, these tires are the reason for the Demons menacing fender flares, which widen the body by 3.5 inches and do much to visually shrink the Challenger. Up front, where they wrap around the fender creases, they seem to pull the hood toward the ground. Out back, they break up the vast acreage of sheetmetal that is the rear-quarters and, coupled with the higher-series slicks on black wheels, add a measure of menace otherwise absent from the Hellcats haunches.

There's more legal sleight of hand in the weaponized powerplant, which makes 808 horsepower and 717 pound-feet of torque. But that's on pump gas. In addition to the wheel-swapping kit, the Demon Crate contains a replacement engine controller that contains programming for race fuel and a new climate-control panel with a 100-octane button. On high-test, the Demon will make 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet of torque.

This 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a single-owner example having covered just 8K miles from new. The interior features the optional passenger seat, rear seat, infotainment system, and Harman/Kardon sound system. The Demon even retains its yellow front-splitter shipping protector, which has become a popular item to preserve and offers a stylish bit of flair to the otherwise menacing Maximum Steel color.
